FVCC enrollment up again

I received this e-mail from Faith Hodges, FVCC executive director of enrollment planning, Tuesday morning.

Good Tuesday Morning. Just a quick message with the latest enrollment numbers. This morning’s counts are as follows:

FTE: 1857.6 (on the 2nd day of Fall 2009, FTE was 1754.53; at 3rd week it was 1794.7 and the final FTE was 1820.40). Today’s FTE represents a 5.9% increase over the FTE on this day last fall.

Headcount: 2433 (on 2nd day of Fall 2009, headcount was 2347 and at 3rd week it was 2501). Today’s headcount represents a 3.7% increase over the headcount on this day last fall.

FYI, FTE stands for full-time equivalent. Two part-time students may count as one FTE. Extra credit goes to the person who correctly answers this question:

What is significant about the FVCC enrollment numbers from Fall 2009?

  1. The enrollment numbers are significant in making 2009 the highest headcount for FVCC. These numbers are also significant for 2010 when predicting the head count should be relatively higher due to many factors in the Flathead Valley.

  2. OK, so now we know what's significant about the 2009 numbers, and the 2010 figures as well. The question for our class is "What are we going to do about it?"

In other words, what stories are we going to write this semester to explain why this is important?

  3. Perhaps stories such as, how it impacts the financial aid department of not only our colleges, but colleges period. The unemployment rate is not just hitting our little valley. It's a national issue.

  4. That's one good idea. The pool of money for financial aid isn't limitless.

  5. It could not only impact the financial aid department but the whole school, and value. Whether the school will have to raise tuition for support is something everyone will be watching for.

  6. I'm going to look into getting someone to come in and speak to the class about FVCC funding. Since its a community college its different than universities in Montana. FVCC is funded more like a K-12 school district, through local property taxes, I believe. But I'm doing something a good reporter should never do, I'm guessing. I'll try to get us an expert to clear this up.
